How to avoid bad breath

Dossier : A temporary period of bad breath or halitosis?

bad breath and what to do about it

Some simple steps will notably improve cases of bad breath, the majority of which are caused by dental problems.  Explore the steps you can take on a daily basis for 'fresh breath'.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR ORAL HYGIENE

To prevent bad odours you must first tackle the factors causing bad breath, especially with regard to rules for daily hygiene:

  • Brush your teeth after each meal
  • Use dental floss

  • Use mouthwash daily

You can get rid of bacteria by brushing the back of your tongue where the taste buds are most visible, the inside of your cheek and the palate.  Using a mouthwash like LISTERINE® Total Care as part of your daily routine, will help you get rid of as much bad-breath causing bacteria as possible, even in the areas your toothbrush can’t reach.

THE ROLE OF SALIVA IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BAD BREATH

Saliva helps get rid of bad odours in the mouth. Citrus fruits (oranges and lemons) and fibre-rich foods like fibrous vegetables stimulate the production of saliva.

Chewing sugar-free mint flavoured chewing-gum or sucking on sweets may sometimes disguise bad odours thanks to their flavour, and stimulate the production of saliva. Once you have finished, however, the normal odour of your breath will return.

AVOID GETTING A DRY MOUTH

It is possible to reduce bad breath by limiting the elements which reduce saliva flow and dry out the mouth, by doing the following:

  • Breathing through your nose, not just your mouth

  • Ensure medicines are used appropriately, for example some antihistamines dry out the mouth

  • Avoiding swallowing food without chewing, as the less you chew, the less saliva you produce

  • Avoiding talking for long periods without drinking water
