Does chewing-gum really get rid of bad breath?

Chewing gums and sweets and other breath-freshener sprays mask the odour of bad breath. But chewing-gums can also have an effect on the origin of bad breath (or halitosis).

In fact sugar free chewing-gums limit the acidity in the mouth and increase salivation while being chewed. Thanks to its anti-bacterial action, saliva creates an effective mouthwash and reduces the bacteria from dental plaque. This dental plaque bacteria would then produce fewer odourous substances.
