Whitening treatments at the dentist

Teeth whitening

Do you want to whiten or lighten your teeth quickly? Talk to your dentist about it.

Only your dental surgeon or hygienist can determine whether you can benefit from teeth whitening. After making sure that whitening is possible, your dentist will begin with a scale.

Certain situations require your practitioner to be particularly vigilant. The following people are unlikely to be suitable for tooth whitening:

  • children under the age of 16,
  • pregnant or breast-feeding women, by way of precaution,
  • people with sensitive teeth or gums,
  • people allergic to peroxide,
  • people suffering from gingivitis, periodontitis or advanced tooth decay,
  • people with fillings, crowns or veneers as these cannot be whitened.

Sessions in the surgery are conducted by a dentist. They consist of lightening the staining of the enamel via a hydrogen peroxide-based solution which can be activated by a high-energy lamp and placed in prolonged contact with the teeth.

Thanks to developments in techniques, the sessions are now much shorter, usually lasting between 30 and 90 minutes. The results are immediate.

Your dental surgeon may offer you a home bleaching treatment. This method combines sessions undertaken at home and regular monitoring by the dentist.  The process consists of three stages:

  1. During the diagnostic visit, the dentist will take impressions of your upper and lower jaw in order to make two plastic trays in which the whitening gel will be placed.
  2. The trays are tested while the dentist indicates how and when to wear them. Depending on the product concentration, the trays will be worn either at night time or in the daytime for a length of time determined by the dentist.
  3. The dentist checks the progress of the whitening after one week. Depending on the findings, the tray's use could be extended for a few more weeks.

Yellowish teeth whiten better than greyish teeth. But for all that, whitening does not provide permanent results. You will need refresher treatments after six, twelve or eighteen months depending on your dietary habits and your oral hygiene. You can also help keep your teeth white by using LISTERINE® STAY WHITE MOUTHWASH, after brushing with your regular toothpaste. Formulated with zinc chloride, this powerful mouthwash fights stains by reducing the build up of tartar.
